GroupM, Application Standards & Prototypes.

GroupM Application Standards
Why?

GLOBAL APPLICATION REDESIGN

GroupM require more consistent visual design and user experiences across all client facing and internal systems and applications, bringing them inline with brand guidelines.

Consistent visual design will help reinforce our connectivity story in pitches, increase user/client satisfaction, increase productivity of developers,  and remove application frustration.

INITIAL IDENTIFIED ISSUE’S

Time, renegotiate deliverable’s, agile rethink & plan required …

No centralized design or development framework

.net dated database framework, page refresh nightmare:)

What?

DESIGN STANDARDS & PROTOTYPES

Working closely with the CPO, we agreed on a new set of milestones and deliverable’s. I would deliver a new set of application design and development standards, this included brochure, copy, patterns, methodology, philosophy, components and prototypes.

New design standards, including patterns, palette, typography

New Agile Methodology

Copy-writing and content

Updated prototype design examples

Empathize & Define

Project Start

IDEATION, RESEARCH

Due to a HR mix up I arrived while the team were on a global team meetup in Singapore for 2 weeks. This did meant I was left on my own to manage all stakeholder, user meetings for initial project research. There was little known at the time of what could be produced within the project time frame.

These initial meetings and research were invaluable in identifying where the most impact could be made with such a short timescale. Working closely with the CPO we agreed UX/UI plan, brief and deadlines. This project truly started from ground zero.

Technical Issues
Principles

UNDERSTANDING USER FIRST METHODOLOGY

The lack of knowledge in what is a, “user first” methodology meant it was critical to take all the stakeholders, managers step by step through the processes we use. It was also critical to have all of the departments involved in the production of the standards. Quick question and answer stand-up type agile meetings were introduced to help with communicating the new standards.

(I generally ban all laptops and telephones from ideation meetings.)

Team & Stakeholder Management
Project Brief

TEAM WORK & COMMUNICATION

When we initially started the project there was no clear brief or project outline. GroupM knew they needed to improve all application designs and workflows, the user feedback was not good.

We communicated with the right people, taking them through ideation and stakeholder meetings. We then took these requirements and produced the brief, project plan, deliverable’s and deadlines.

Prototype & Testing

Info Arch, User Journey …
Jackdaw User Flow

UX PROCESS, IA, USER JOURNEY’S, WORKFLOWS ETC

Although the priorities had changed to producing the, “GroupM Application Standards” document. It was also necessary to produce prototypes as examples, 2 application were chosen. These were taken through the full UX process, info Arch, workflows, content hierarchy, personas and user journeys.

Wireframes
Lo-Fi Wireframes

INITIAL SKETCHES, LO-FI WIREFRAMES

We worked closely with the CPO, Stakeholders and Users to collate as much information as possible. Taking the guys through workshops to produce Lo-Fi wireframes and sketches, this ensured we captured all the user requirements.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECT

GroupM’s application standards are already making a big difference in the way applications are designed and delivered.

GroupM’s applications although very different in what they do, the applications now have standard layout and workflow.
